300hr Yoga Teacher Training led by Ryan Cunningham

limited to 6 humans currently teaching group asana classes

Teaching is a practice unto itself. It is a process of taking one's own understanding of yoga and attempting to describe it and share it with others. This program will organize around the following questions:

  • What is our understanding of yoga practice?
  • What is effective teaching?
  • How do we give and receive feedback?
  • What is the "why?" behind our teaching choices?

The education that students receive in the initial 200hr training standard is really just enough to start the practice of teaching. Once the process has begun, many new teachers find themselves needing more information about the human body, yoga practice, philosophy, and more.  This program aims to fill in those gaps and facilitate further dialogue about what yoga is and whether our teaching is congruent with our understanding of practice.

The training is limited to 6 teachers to ensure a safe space to engage in dialogue, give/receive feedback, and think outside the box.

Trimester I: Orientation + Refining Personal Practice

  • 6-7:30pm Asana Class with Ryan
  • 7:30-9:30pm Anatomy + Asana Lab
  • 9:30-10pm Meditation + Savasana

In order to explore the possibility of making yoga more accessible and valuable to students we have to first (re)examine why it is valuable to us. The first trimester will be focused on defining and reexamining the forms of practice so we can think about "poses" simply and clearly - outside of standard "cues" and "alignment points".

Trimester II: Re-Thinking the Role of the Teacher

  • 6-7:30pm Asana Class with Ryan
  • 7:30-9:30pm Teaching Strategy and Methodology
  • 9:30-10pm Meditation + Savasana

A significant part of this training will involve examining how we can "break the fourth wall" and hand agency back to the students to experience, interpret, and be curious about their direct experience. In exploring these teaching strategies we will also address common concerns of different populations in the context of a group yoga class.

Trimester III: Thinking Simply in Context

  • 6-7:30pm Asana Class with Ryan
  • 7:30-9:30pm Special Topics
  • 9:30-10pm Meditation + Savasana

The attitude that we hold towards yoga, spirituality, and the human body in general, deeply influences how we practice and teach. Understanding the attitudes embedded in the philosophical teachings, as well as their history, is essential for understanding context. The third trimester will focus on strategies to communicate these teachings (explicitly and implicitly) through group class. Students will practice teaching concepts rather than peak poses, as well as practice leading "dharma" talks on topics of their choosing.

Second Sundays: Dharma and Practicum

  • 12-1:30pm Practicum
  • 1:30-2:30pm Feedback + Discussion
  • 2:30-2:45 Break
  • 2:45-4pm Meditation and Dharma Talk

Individual Practicum:

Each quarter Ryan will attend each student's public class and schedule a time to meet with them individually to discuss and give constructive feedback.

Electives:

In order to complete the 300hrs students will need to attend 60hrs of study with approved teachers. This will be worked out individually based on the student's interest and does not need to be completed within the year of the training.
